How Do You Know You Are Lost?

When I was younger, being lost usually involved a wrong turn, a paper map, and a sense of adventure not knowing where I was going but enjoying the journey anyways.

These days, being lost looks different.

You can be sitting in your favorite chair, drinking coffee, and still feel completely lost.

For me, feeling lost sometimes sneaks in quietly. It shows up when I wake up wondering what happened to the person I used to be. It appears when I spend more time meeting everyone else’s expectations than listening to my own heart.

Being lost isn’t always about not knowing where you are.

Sometimes it’s about not knowing who you are.

Signs You Might Be Lost

You might be lost if:

  • You say “yes” when you want to say “no.”
  • You can’t remember the last thing you did simply because you enjoyed it.
  • You spend more time worrying about what others think than what God thinks.
  • You feel disconnected from your dreams, passions, and purpose.
  • You keep moving but aren’t sure where you’re headed.

Being lost can feel frustrating. Trust me, I’ve spent enough time wandering emotional backroads to know.

The Good News

Getting lost isn’t the same as staying lost.

Every GPS I’ve ever used has a wonderful feature. When I miss a turn, it doesn’t scream, “Well, you’ve ruined everything!”

It simply says, “Recalculating.”

I love that.

God is the master of recalculating.

The Bible is full of people who got lost. Moses wandered in the desert. Jonah boarded the wrong ship. The prodigal son wandered far from home. Yet God met each of them exactly where they were.

Not where they should have been.

Not where they wished they were.

Where they actually were.

Questions to Ask Yourself

If you’re wondering whether you’re lost, ask yourself:

  • Am I living according to my values or someone else’s expectations?
  • What brings me peace?
  • What drains me?
  • When do I feel most like myself?
  • Have I invited God into this season of confusion?

Sometimes the answers don’t come immediately. Sometimes they arrive one small step at a time.

Maybe Being Lost Has a Purpose

I’ve learned that some of my greatest discoveries happened when I stopped pretending I knew exactly where I was going.

Being lost forced me to ask questions.

It taught me humility.

It reminded me that I need God.

And perhaps most importantly, it helping me find my way back to myself.

So if you’re feeling lost today, take heart.

Lost is not your destination.

It’s simply a place on the journey home.
