Oh How I Remember That Phrase
Our minds never seem to clock out. Thoughts stream through all day long. Some inspire us. Others criticize us, predict disaster, or replay conversations we’d rather forget.
The surprising part is that not every thought deserves to be believed.
For years, I treated every thought as if it were a fact. If I thought I wasn’t good enough, I assumed it was true. If my mind imagined the worst-case scenario, I reacted as though it had already happened.
Then I learned something simple, yet life-changing.
I can observe my thoughts without becoming them.
Instead of reacting immediately, I can pause and ask:
- Is this thought based on facts or assumptions?
- Is it helping me or hurting me?
- Would I say this to someone I love?
- What response would serve me best right now?
That brief pause changes everything. It creates a little breathing room between what happens in our minds and how we respond.
Our thoughts are often influenced by past experiences, fear, stress, and old habits. They aren’t always accurate reflections of reality. When we begin to notice them with curiosity instead of judgment, we gain the freedom to choose our next step instead of operating on autopilot.
I’ve come to realize that I am not my thoughts. I am the person noticing them.
Some thoughts are worth listening to. Others are simply mental background noise. Learning the difference takes practice, but it’s one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves.
There are still days when I react before I realize what’s happening. I’m human. But each time I pause, notice, and choose my response, I’m building a new way of living. One that is calmer, kinder, and more intentional.
The goal isn’t to stop thinking. It’s to stop letting every thought become the author of your day.
